Who needs it?

Parenteral Nutrition (PN), also referred to as TPN or IV Nutrition, is provided to people who cannot consume enough or absorb enough nutrients to meet their body’s nutritional needs.

What is it?

PN is a special type of nutrition support that is delivered through an intravenous (IV) catheter. The PN solution contains all of the necessary nutrients that your body needs, including carbohydrates, protein, fat, electrolytes, vitamins, minerals and water. Option Care Health’s Registered Dietitians (RDs) can work with you and your Prescriber to determine the best nutritional formulation for your clinical condition to meet your individual needs.

How is it given?

PN bypasses the body’s normal digestive system and goes directly into the bloodstream through an IV catheter. The PN formulation will come in a bag and is infused by a pump. Your Option Care Health RD and pharmacy team can obtain a written order from your Prescriber and discuss with you how much you need each day in order to meet your nutritional needs.

How will I learn?

Our Clinical Transition Specialist, who are registered nurses, will work with you and your family until you are confident in knowing exactly how to administer your nutrition infusion. You will also receive detailed written instructions and have access to extensive resources to help you along the way.

How will I receive my deliveries of nutrition and supplies?

After your Prescriber sends us your information and we have verified everything, your delivery will be sent to your preferred address in a timely, safe and professional manner. We take pride in the quality of our supplies and delivery.

Will my insurance cover it?

Insurance benefits vary according to the individual insurance plan. Our Benefits Coordinator will contact your insurance provider to obtain your benefit information. Financial information and insurance coverage will be discussed with you before your service begins.
